This simple fact cannot be argued: contaminants that come in contact with oxygen in oxygen-rich atmospheres can, and do, ignite and burn far more easily and far more rapidly than normal. Lives have been lost and strong, aggressive litigation proceedings have been documented regarding accountability concerning the aftermaths of industrial accidents traced back to contaminants in oxygen systems that should have been removed in a timely manner, but were not.
Those contaminants – ranging from weld slag, skin, paper and lint particles to VOC compounds, hydrocarbon-based greases & oils, acids, nitrates, etc – have the infamous reputation for posing serious risks when they are part of an oxygen rich atmosphere. When oxygen serves as an oxidizer and the contaminants serve as fuel, there is a 3rd component to this equation that is, equally, worth noting: the source of heat or ignition.
That source can take the form of friction of materials sliding against others, static electricity, electrical arcs from equipment, impacts or being struck with a particle, vibration or resonance, and compression of a liquid, known as Heat of Compression. Removing the heat source – ie: contaminants – is imperative and should be done on a regular basis to ensure the on-going efficacy of cleaning for oxygen procedures.
